Lopez Island Barn

Lopez Island, Washington
2010

This small barn is used for drying and storing firewood; for tractor and boat storage; and for a small workshop. A shed roof form induces natural ventilation and provides ample daylighting. Lower rafters brace the main span and extend out to shelter a column-free outdoor work area. Durable materials include Portland cement stucco with integral color; standing seam metal roofing; aluminum clad windows and louvers on the windward south side; wood louvers and stopped-in glass on the lee north side. Drawing upon the simplicity and elegance of farmhouses, barns and outbuildings of New England, we sought to make a little barn that is both practical and proud.
